Literacy month
Every year in November, AIA celebrates literacy month and promotes the learning of language in a festive atmosphere during which our learning community participates in various language activities across the elementary school. These activities provide students with opportunities to be creative, think out of the box and consolidate their communication skills, making learning more fun and engaging.
Throughout this month, students plugged into reading every morning as they listened to stories narrated by their teachers and/or classmates. During the Read to Me Grandma! Read to Me Grandpa! activity, students displayed their creative skills as they dressed up as grandparents and role modeled reading bedtime stories to their classmates. The Read-a-thon competition was yet another opportunity for students to stand out as star readers. Students from across the school competed against each other and collected the highest number of stars to become the school’s Star Reader. Winners were awarded certificates and prizes during a celebration on Zoom to honor their effort and hard work.
The Morning Literacy Show was the students’ window to other classes. Ms. Danielle hosted this program every Thursday, where she announced events and presented snapshots from different activities. The students also enjoyed watching the play which was prepared by Mr. Bassel and acted by 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students in both English and Arabic.
Language-based activities were abundant and helped to develop the students’ writing and communication skills in vibrant real lifelike competitions which included Trivia, I Write, You Illustrate! Draw and Act Out Idioms, and Character Hair Day.
The Literacy Month was concluded with a character parade where all teachers and students from Pre-K up to grade five dressed in Arabic and English characters and participated in the school parade in the main hall where they were given the opportunity to express how these characters had influenced their choice. This festive month provided students with an opportunity to develop their language skills and bring out their creativity.
